To illustrate how much more complex the ETF market is now than it was only a decade ago, bear in mind that the number of ETFs now totals nearly 2,000, compared to just more than 200 in 2006. Not only is that ten-fold growth, but ETFs have achieved a level of popularity and complexity that took other asset classes much longer to achieve. There are now four times as many ETFs as there are stocks in the S&P 500.
