Mary Jo White to head the SEC

White is currently a partner at New York-based law firm Debevoise & Plimpton, but it was in her role as the US Attorney in Manhattan where she made a name for herself prosecuting Ramzi Yousef, who was behind the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and as an attorney in Brooklyn, where she led the prosecution against mafia boss John Gotti. She was also the first woman to be named US Attorney in Manhattan.

White will replace Elisse Walter, who was serving as the interim SEC chairman after Schapiro stepped down from the post last month. Schapiro had served as the head of the SEC since 2009.

White's appointment is still subject to confirmation by the US Senate. Her nomination by President Obama will be made official later today.
